Why Children shouldn’t have a Cellphone at school?
I strongly believe that cellphones should NOT be allowed at primary school. Would you like your child to be distracted from work and learning? I believe children shouldn’t have a cell phone at school because it would be a MAJOR distraction, would make them not want to go outside at lunchtime and they already have a device that they can use to contact you. Here is why I don’t think that cellphones should be allowed at school.
I think that if you let your child bring their cellphone to school, they won’t be able to concentrate on what they are doing. They will be constantly checking their phone for texts and messages. Danielle Einstein, psychologist, says that the mere presence of one’s phone consumes attention even when it’s not being checked and it’s been shown we have reduced working memory capacity and fluid intelligence when our phone is upside down and silent on our desk compared with when it is in another room. Then they could fall behind on work and not learn what they’re meant to. Then they might not even get a job when they are older.
My second reason is that they won’t want to get outside at lunchtime. They won’t be fit or healthy. Young children should engage in at least 180 minutes of physical activity a day from the age of 1 to improve their health, as recommended by the World Health Organization. They need to socialize and have FUN and talk with people and make friends. Will this be possible if your child is glued to their phone at lunchtime?
Lastly, they have their chromebook to contact you if something happens. They can research on it and write on it. I actually think that a phone screen is actually too small to research on. It is easier to see on a chromebook, with a bigger screen. If you don’t have someones email on your chromebook, and only on your phone, then ask them for it, or check it on your phone at home before or after school. That shouldn’t be a reason to bring your phone to school, just because you can’t email someone.
This is why I think that children should not have a phone at school. They’ll get distracted easily and won’t focus on work, they won’t get fresh air or socialize outside and they already have a device to email if they need to. Do you want your child to be behind in all their work just because they take their phone to school? Yeah, I didn’t think so either!
